With the end of the year coming soon, it is now the end of my ISM journey! I truly feel that this class has helped me gain confidence in my speaking skills, as well as learn how to cold call and present myself professionally. It has taught me the importance of learning about my field and given me research skills that I will certainly take to college. As for my mission statement, I do believe that I held true to it since I researched health disparities in my final product and made sure to include the increased risks that minorities have for cardiac disease, spreading awareness.
My original work was originally actually quite similar to my final product, but I decided to downsize it to just focus on Heart Failure in a brochure format. This greatly helped me with my final product, since my final product focused on all MACEs (major adverse cardiac events). Heart Failure is a type of MACE, so I was able to expand on that in my final product. At Final Product Night, I was able to present all my hard work throughout the year and focus on my final product. I presented in front of my parents and Ms. Lin, all of whom were very proud of me!
As for my goals, I believe that I was able to reach them! I had wanted to gain some sort of mentoring opportunity and I was able to gain an advisorship with Dr. Parmar. He has been instrumental in helping me develop my original and final product! However, there are still many unfinished goals of mine like shadowing a doctor, which I hope to realize over the summer.
As I move forward, these skills will greatly help me secure research and volunteering opportunities in the medical field. I decided to commit to UT Austin (go longhorns!) and so in such a big school, my ISM gained skills will greatly help me stand out.
Overall, I have had an amazing experience in ISM! I will definitely miss it since I am graduating.
